This walk is relatively easy with few climbs but care has to be taken because the path is very rocky and very slippery in the wet.
We followed the lane from Borrowdale youth hostel, crossed the main road (B5289) at the T junction and made our way to Stonethwaite.
On the wall outside a restaurant is a plaque suggesting that the sun doesn't shine very often in Borrowdale!

The road ends at Stonethwaite. We continued on a footpath, keeping Stonethwaite Beck close on the left, until reaching the meeting of Stonethwaite Beck and Langstrath Beck.
We continued on the footpath keeping the Langstrath Beck to our left until reaching the footbridge at Tray Dub. Here we crossed the bridge turning left to join the Cumbria Way.
We had lunch here by the Beck overlooked by Blea Crag.

We now kept the Langstrath Beck on our left until crossing the footbridge at Smithymire Island .
The bridge was re-erected in memory of a 21 year old member of the Manchester Mountaineering Club who died of exhaustion in this dale in 1939 despite strenuous efforts by his friends to save him.
From here we continued on the footpath until reaching the Hotel at Rosthwaite. We turned left here walking along the B5289 until reaching the lane leading to the Youth Hostel.
