Cotherstone is situated at the confluence of the Tees and Balder and is believed to have been of importance in Viking times.

Again Judith brought us good luck with another beautiful day for walking.

We started by walking through the village and joining a footpath (010199 ) leading to a minor road near Balder Grange. Here we turned left and after a short distance we turned left on to a footpath (000198) up onto a dismantled railway line.

Approaching Lanquittes

We turned right onto line and after crossing the Balder turned left onto footpath, with the Balder to the left, leading to West End farm.

We passed through the farm following the footpath, past Yew Scar, until reaching Lanquittes, where we turned left, soon reaching a minor road. Here we turned left over a bridge, with a weir to the right, on to the Cotherstone road.

In the fields to the right we passed what looked like walled gardens but were in fact enclosed mine shafts. Just after Briscoe farm we turned right along a tarmac track, over a footbridge and then right along a footpath. Shortly after this a right turn was made across open land (977191) on an indistinct path - until reaching the tarmac track again.

We turned right onto the track until we reached a footpath, with Booze Wood (a rare breeds farm) on the right, where we had lunch. The footpath was followed until reaching a minor road leading to Lance Bridge where we took a left turn onto a footpath back to Cotherstone.
