DAY 7 - BANKS TO CROSBY-ON-EDEN - 12/07/06

This section was easy but relatively uninteresting compared with previous sections. There were very few visible wall remains - except where the route of the Vallum could be seen. Most of the stone of Hadrian's Wall has gone towards building farms and other building all around the area.

Just before Dovecote Bridge, before Walton, is the Roman site of Dovecote Bridge abutments. This section of the wall was built from local sandstone which is easily eroded by wind and rain (and visitors). The site was excavated in the 1960's but reburied 20 years later to prevent further erosion and so now only a grassy mound remains.

We finally arrived at the Stag Inn in Crosby on Eden - good beer, very friendly staff, with a genuine 'oldie world' feel to it. We were so impressed we may be using it for our celebration meal when we finally complete our Hadrian's Wall path walk. The Stag was badly affected by the extreme flood on 8 January 2005 with about 3 foot of water inside the pub, but it appears to have fully recovered.

The porch on the right hand side was the entrance to the post office, long since shut down.
